Book Information & Summary
Written by Oh Ju Young and Illustrated by Kyung Hye Won
A collection of six fairy tales that explore the complex and subtle emotions of relationships with others and expand one's world. The title story, ‘Romantic Peach,’ which depicts the tickling feelings of children, is about a girl named Seung-Ah, who is nicknamed Peach because of her name, and hears the words “I like Peach” from her favorite friend. It delicately portrays the emotions that every child has experienced at least once, such as love, sadness, and regret.
Seung-Ah, the main character of ‘Romantic Peach,’ is nicknamed ‘Peach’ because of her name. For some reason, Seung-Ah’s fate seems to be connected to peaches, and she accidentally breaks her leg and has ligaments around her peach bone stretched. Eventually, Lee Chan decides to give Seung-Ah, who is in a cast, a ride to the academy on his bicycle for a round-trip delivery fee of 4,000 won. Seung-Ah wraps her hands around Lee Chan's waist and sits on the back of the bike, her heart dancing with each bump and jolt. After the sharp, sweet pain from her injured ankle bone, a word from Lee Chan makes Seung-Ah's peach burst like it's filled with fruit juice.
It would be nice if love were as sweet and exciting as this, but unfortunately, love is not like that. ‘Now, Spring’ begins with Doo-na applying rose-colored lip balm before going out. Today is the day she meets Woo-seok. However, Woo-seok does not listen to Doo-na's heart's voice, but instead makes a completely different sound. Doo-na, who tastes a sweet and bitter flavor, is at the same time engulfed in a strange feeling while watching an old man carrying the luggage of an old lady in the neighborhood. Why is it that the grandfather's friend, who laughed with his wife, saying that he was tired of living together, is not sad but funny? Is this also love? Doo-na wonders if the love of the grandfathers is the same as hers. The two short stories that decorated the beginning and end of the collection depicted the various forms of the word, love.
Like a peach that is soft on the outside but hard on the inside, if you hold the two soft pieces between your fingers, you will find that the pieces on the inside are hard and heavy. ‘Soul Button’ depicts Seo-ra's separation from her father. Seo-ra was separated from her father forever due to an accident, but she is still connected to him through her father's button. Seo-ra, who used to hold a button that sent a sharp signal whenever something dangerous happened, eventually learned to let go and find a way to say goodbye to her father. Unlike her name, Go-yo of ‘A Night Without Silence’ always spends a noisy night. Soo-ho, who was once angry at the sound of music coming through the ceiling every night, one day hears Go-yo's scream in the music. Soo-ho finds out that the music was turned up to hide domestic violence, and he visits Go-yo, who has left the house, and holds her hand.
‘Hello’ depicts the subtle relationship between friends that all children can relate to. Ga-on feels uncomfortable in the company of friends with whom she has become unequal, as the favors she has readily given out of a desire to become close become a burden at some point. Ga-on, who has been receiving awkward glances from her friends, recalls Seol Gyeong-ji, a child who is being bullied, and turns her head for fear of being bullied herself. Now that they are in the same position, Ga-on opens the box in her heart that she had been holding in and says ‘hello’ to Gyeong-ji. Meanwhile, ‘The Earth Handbook of Dam-yi’ is set on a planet where the Earthlings have become few and only alien travelers visit, and where everyone says that “everything is ruined,” but Dam-yi wants to walk on the broken roads on her own two feet.
