Book Information & Summary
written and illustrated by Cho Wonhee
A dog with an injured leg is shivering in the corner of the shelter. We don't know why it hurt its leg, but its eyes are full of fear as it looks at people. Some people have extended a warm hand to the dog. This book is the story of a dog named “Hodoo,” who was abandoned by a person, and the people who stayed with Hodoo. It is also a record of the author's 1 year and 4 months of time until she met Hodoo. Despite the fact that the writer experienced the reality more deeply than anyone else, she stepped out of the story and told the events that happened to Hodoo in a calm and unadorned manner. In the silence created by the unadorned writing and restrained expression of illustrations, readers can quietly focus on the thoughts and emotions that come to them.
There is only one part that is colored in this book, which is all expressed in monochrome tone. That part is people. The illustrator paints people in different colors. The colors are also reflected in the things they give to Hodoo. As you follow the illustrator’s expression, you will notice the actions of the people. A man drives a car, carrying Hodoo halfway there, another person takes Hodoo to the vet, and the vet gives a discount on Hodoo’s treatment. The person who temporarily took care of Hodoo sent him to a more stable place when the other dog he was taking care of got sick, and the person who lives alone gives Hodoo a quiet space.
Those who helped Hodoo are just doing what they can. They all do what they can in their daily lives to take care of the dog together. In this book, there are pictures of people's hands coming together, and the expression “and then” is repeated. If people's help had not continued, Hodoo would not have met the “person who did not have to share with other dogs” and would not have been able to eat and sleep comfortably. If you continue to give up small parts of your daily life in this way, you may eventually create something special that saves many lives.
