Book Information & Summary
written and illustrated by Lee Myung Ae
Something hidden in a fiercely competitive dodge ball game finally wakes up.
The main character, who survived luckily while other friends get eliminated one by one, accidentally receives a ball. If she doesn’t attack within 5 seconds, she will be automatically eliminated. Therefore, she begins considering deeply how to make her move while facing her friends as time flows. What shall she choose to do?
Just like simple rules, the result of dodge ball game is very clear – win or lose. However, what is left behind is not quite simple, though. Children might feel sad when they were hit in already wounded hand, or also feel frustrated to be eliminated to help other friends. Sometimes, they can feel very complicated under the pressure to throw the ball choosing one of his or her close friends, and they could be under the situation they should do something violent which they never mean. All these feelings may continue to stay in children’s minds even after the game ends. At the end of this story, the writer shows cheerful children who are all united and run together as if nothing happened. However, now we all know that there are things we cannot see even if we are staring.
The writer, Lee Myung Ae, expressed a ball in an orange color among white and black illustrations. Therefore, the movement of the ball seizes our eyes immediately when we open this book. When we expand our views toward those white and black color space, we can see the movement of body and facial expressions of children hit by the ball and their emotions far beyond.
This book asks the question. Perhaps not only this picture book, but also our view of everyday life, is stuck in a place of inertia. May the whistle wake up the dulled senses of the familiar and make us take a sharp look at the things we take for granted.
