Book Information & Summary
written by Kim Yet
The author, who has solidified his world with stories of ordinary people digging for the truth of death or helping their neighbors in the face of apocalypse or national disaster, brings a real-life disappearance to the novel, providing both formal interest and the suspense of solving the case. The "Disappearance of the Roanoke Islanders" is a real-life event that took place in the 1580s, when more than a hundred settlers disappeared without a trace over a three-year period, a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.
The case is introduced in the novel through the booklet 'The Lost Sock Theory', which the main character, Kang Yoo-Er, bought on a trip to the United States a few years ago. The pamphlet was written by Paul Jenkins, who dedicated his life to the Roanoke Island disappearances, arguing that 'the missing socks are in the house' and that the disappearances should be investigated by asking 'did they really disappear?' instead of focusing on where they went. The author, Paul Jenkins, also disappeared, leaving questions unanswered. These mysterious events, coupled with Kang Yoo Er's current case of her sister's disappearance, put the reader in the middle of several layers of speculation. In the meantime, the reader becomes a detective and approaches the truth of the case by searching for the sparks placed by the author in the unknown forest one by one, just like the sentence in the novel, "What is not clear always sparks the imagination" (p. 8).
These events, which occur right at the beginning of the book, immediately draw the reader into the story and put them on Yoo Er’s side. She contacts her cousin Jae-won in the United States to find out how these events are connected. But the author doesn't stop there, pulling the reader into another case. Around the same time as her sister's disappearance, mysterious beings began to appear in Korea, the United States, and China, offering the "kiss of life" by pulling out circular booby-trap-like gums. In the midst of this tidal wave of events, can Yoo Er find her sister? Can she save the world? No, does the world need to be saved?
