Book Information & Summary
'Democratic Human Rights Picture Book'
'Democratic Human Rights Picture Book' is a non-fiction picture book series (8 volumes in total) published by Sakyejul Publishing Ltd. in collaboration with the Democratic Movement Commemoration. The books take a closer look at the modern society we live in and identify various social agendas, which are then presented in picture books. Discrimination and inequality, migrant labor, gender roles, sensitivity to violence, and the meaning of democracy and human rights are presented in these picture books that children and adults can relate to and easily understand in their daily lives.
The series features a number of authors who are currently working on picture books, each with their own unique body of work. Winners of the Bologna Ragazzi Award, BIB, and Korea Picture Book Award, as well as unique picture book authors with strong fan bases, joined us. Thirteen picture book authors from Korea and abroad agreed with the intention of the Democratic Rights Picture Book and actively participated in this project.
The 'Democracy and Human Rights Picture Book Project' was launched in early 2022 with the intention of establishing picture books as an exhibition content in the field of Korea's contemporary history. The project, which was executed with the hope that the values of democracy and human rights would be conveyed to future generations through the high artistic and communicative power of picture books, has now come to fruition and will be published as a picture book.

When you think of "measurement," what comes to your mind? Do you think of rulers and scales? Whether it's measuring your height and weight to see how obese you are, taking a test and getting a report card, or performing a task at work and being evaluated, measurement is a tool for getting a value. Measurement takes everything in the world and turns it into a number. In recent years, applications on smartphones have made it possible to measure even the most intimate details of our personal lives, such as our sleep quality, diet, exercise, and spending habits. Measurement is translated into numbers, and numbers are translated into data that we can easily see in our daily lives. In the modern world, is measurement just a useful tool to make life easier?
The author, Kwon, Jung Min, has created a unique picture book by focusing on the nature of "measurement," which compels us to compare and quantify anything and everything. Everyone who reads this picture book is engaged in measurement. Basic measurements, deep measurements, and synthesized measurements. We invite you to enter the 'world of measurement' where systematic and precise measurements abound
In this picture book, the main character of measurement is a cat. The cat performs measurements at the basic, advanced, and synthesis levels. Cats are depicted as both experiencing measurement and being measured. In a scene from Basic Measurement, we show cute faces of cats with different fur colors and tell them that your color has a significant impact on your life. At first glance, it's hard to see how the color of a cat's fur could have a significant impact on its life, but then you put a person of a different color in the cat's place. Once you've switched the cat and the human, you're reminded of the everyday human behaviors to express kindness that are based on the cat's color.
In deeper measurement, cats measure their abilities. Abilities that are essential for a healthy and vibrant life, such as stamina, quickness, endurance, concentration, and thinking. There is a scene depicting a graduation photo from a university. Among the cats wearing bachelor caps and black gowns and holding bouquets of flowers, I show one cat not wearing a bachelor cap and ask the question. "Do you have any way to prove who you are?" Because the cap and gown are both an accomplishment of academic integrity and a symbol that separates those who have gone to college from those who haven't, it's a stark reminder of the insensitive perception of judging people by their academic credentials, and a sharp look at a society where academic bias breeds discrimination.
Once you get to the comprehensive measurement stage, you'll see measurements that have become embedded in everyday life. For example, we show the screen of a cell phone, which has become a necessity for modern people. It makes you think about whether social media is a place of freedom of self-expression, or a place of constant comparison, conscious of the attention of others.
