The beginning of the relationship brightening up the disappeared light in the memories.
We all owe someone else money in life. Not only financial debt, but also the debt originated in easily forgotten relationship. Sometimes, we receive an umbrella under the sudden rain, and we smile on others who are alone around us. These sweet moments, which cannot happen without small interests in others, are easily forgotten beyond our memories because of other issues in front of us.
The main character in this book also has forgotten this kinds of valuable relationship. Mi-Joo, a 18-year-old girl, who lives in a big family, has a wish to be alone – of course at her home, not at her school. However, she is not good at building a relationship with friends, so she finally chooses unexpected way.
She lied to her friends that the old Chinese restaurant her parents own, Mi Joo Hong, was a fancy restaurant to win them over. She also stole her mother’s credit card and waste money. In the end, the truth was revealed and she got to have a lot of debt. She put herself under the minus circumstance in terms of money and relationship. When she finally paid all her debt back by doing a part time job of peeling onions for almost a year, she found out that she had another debt of 500 won, which she had not expected at all. Even she owed her classmate, ‘Se Ah’, who barely stood out at school! She didn’t remember when she owed her 500 won. When did she borrow this small cash, then?
The story beginning with 500 won, which is quite unexpectedly overlapping event between them, is even more attracting to readers thanks to a strong and honest character, Mi Joo. The writer, Jeon Ann, who has created a character who looked evil, but was not hated by us easily, let readers follow many strange events happening to Mi Joo. She bluntly treated Se Ah, who became a ghost, by saying, “It’s not good to have the rumor I’m hanging out with a ghost because I’m alone anyway in school.” She also respected minor culture like rock music, or did not hesitate to reveal her own taste. She looked like a ‘Ann of Green Gables’, who is never ashamed of herself and goes her own way. The reason why we want to cheer her up in this easygoing character is that she is actually filled with solitude inside and does not have any good way to solve her situations. Just like comforting Mi Joo who struggles by herself, Se Ah approaches her with 500 won debt.
