The friendship and courage among children walking together at the different speed and width
When the sports club opened in school, Yoon-Seo, a 13-year-old girl, insisted to create the ‘walking club’. If the club was just to walk, nobody would join the club. Then, Yoon Seo could be alone during the club activity time. However, unexpected members wanted to join the club, and she was elected as the club president. There is Gang Eun, who joined the club to help Yoon Seo whom she was not that familiar with, Hye Yoon who was just kicked out of another club, Jae Hee whom nobody saw running, and finally, Yoon Seo whose reason to join the club was she could exercise alone. Would these children with different characters and personalities be able to walk together?
Before transfer, Yoon Seo found out her best friend, Chae Min, was the victim of domestic violence. Chae Min asked her to keep a secret, but Yoon Seo told her situation to other adults. She thought it was for Chae Min. However, Chae Min had to be separated with her family and blamed Yoon Seo for transferring to another school. After that, Yoon Seo decided not to make friends anymore.
This book focused on how Yoon Seo changed. By participating in the walking club activities, Yoon Seo began to look around herself. She realized that the school clock went a bit late and there lived a puppy who knew how to come back home by itself at the apartment on the way to school. She also found out that it took 30 minutes to walk around the lake park. Most of all, the biggest change which happened to Yoon Seo was she got friends to walk with.
The writer was one of the most beloved writers among teenagers, because she carefully watched the rapidly changing ordinary life of teenagers and their hearts, and because she had excellent eyes to discover the connecting link to their feelings and wishes. The writer used to invite readers into the fantasy world, but with this book, she closely approached the children’s reality. Those children did not have superpower to change the reality or shift their shapes. However, they independently and proudly walked toward the suffering past and difficult today. There was no shortcut, and running is considered as cheating in the world of ‘walking’. They did not try to overtake others and were willing to wait a friend behind them, and finally began to realize their own pace. This book of ‘Walking Club of 13-Year-Old Children’ is the right book for us in this world where the speed and competition are important values and where the distance among people get far due to Covid-19.
