Book Information & Summary
Written by Tak Kyung Eun
Life sometimes leaves us ‘alone’. The book, ‘Mint Moon’, is a novel collection containing the stories of teenagers who happen to be alone. The characters in these five short novels face with loneliness as if they have been left alone in the world when they are in the street where so many people come and go, in the same classroom all the time, in a situation where they are with friends they believe, in the house with the family, and finally even in their own familiar rooms. However, they feel that there may be no one to protect them and nowhere to come back. At those moments, the teenagers in ‘Mint Moon’ decides to go a step forward instead of just standing there. With that small step, the dead-end life become just some darkness they can easily pass by for several times on the way.
The first short story, ‘Now in Period’, chooses a so-called ‘menstruation loyalty’ as a material. Menstruation loyalty is the attitude that women help each other and never ask reward when they have problems related to menstruation. The social recognition these days has changed recently, but still people mind talking about ‘period’ in front of others. The writer has pleasantly described the private life of female teenagers and their thoughts about ‘period’. Furthermore, the first suffering of Yoo Na who has somewhat strict standard on ‘friendship and life’ is well mixed together in the story.
The main character, Young Wook, of ‘This Life is Ruined’, is not good at anything - academic performance, gymnasium, or even computer games. He is not funny and doesn’t have any role models. He laughs at himself because his life of this time is already ruined. However, his hidden desire comes out whenever he does something, even if he thinks that ‘There is nothing ashamed or sad if another failure happens on so many existing failures’. (p. 49) ‘The desire that I have one thing I am good at’ (p. 51)
The main character, Min Jeong, of ‘Mint Moon’, is so into the fan fiction world she created rather than into her own reality where she is continuously compared with. As she has more experiences becoming a main character in the fan fiction world with her favorite musician, her belief that she is the one who knows her musician the best is getting stronger. She becomes frustrated and desperate when the musician left the world one day. ‘The man I loved so much has gone. Without him, the fan fiction is no use.’
The main characters in these five short stories are teenagers who feel completely alone under a variety of circumstances. Their loneliness contains their desperate wishes. They want something they are good at. They want somebody who believe in them. They want a single hope supporting their difficult days. These wishes that look trivial and too ordinary are the reasons and powers to survive found by teenagers who have to be judged by adults in their narrow life.
