Book Information & Summary
Written by Woo Kim Dong Chun
It has been 4 years already since Moon, Jae-In administration began as ‘candle-light’ government. The new administration has insisted on the equality of opportunity, the fairness of process, and the justice of result. However, with various events such as division caused by the former Minister of Justice Department, Cho Kook, several sexually violent crimes by high-ranking public servants, transfer to regular employees of Incheon International Airport Corporation workers, and the strike by medical residents, the Korean society has gone through severe social strugglings and even the value of progressive party is also in doubt. Under these circumstances, the level of happiness and satisfaction on politics is no different from the one in the past.
Professor Kim, Dong-Chun explains the reason of internal division Korean society is recently going through, saying, “It is because Korean social issues these days are originated from the historical structure itself.” Since its liberation in 1945 and even further beyond, since the end of Cho Sun Dynasty, there had been so many layered divisions and issues between enlightenment party vs. Japanese civil rights party, pro-Japanese group vs. Korean independence group, anti-communism vs. peace and unification group, developing dictatorial government vs. democratic republic government in Korean history, and moreover, the enlightenment party, pro-Japanese group, anti-communism, and dictatorial government have grabbed the power in terms of almost every issues. This ‘historical structure’ can be explained as the outcome of modern Korean society.
This book titled, ‘Why, Korea? 1945-2020’, is revised version of ‘Why, Korea? 1945-2015’, which first was published along with the attempt to standardize national history textbook by Park Guen Hye administration in 2015. The book is revised because the first priority to resolve social division today is to promote understanding ‘historical structure’ of Korean modern history. In this revised version, the writer contained modern history research results since the original version publishment, and added the original books about Korean modern history, reference books, and appendix as footnotes. Furthermore, the writer also analyzed the background of ‘Anti-Japanese Tribalism’, the center of controversy in Korean modern history, and its theoretical structure. By doing so, he also included a new chapter to prove that ‘Anti-Japanese Tribalism’ is not historical theory but just ‘conservative politics theory’. (Chapter 15. Thoughts on ‘Anti-Japanese Tribalism’)
