Book Information & Summary
The night in a deep mountain colored in dark black and blue color, a tiger which looks both funny and scary at the same time just like the character of ‘Magpie and Tiger’, well-known Korean traditional painting, and an old tree with high curving lines… These backgrounds and characters are all getting along with the innocence of a young boy and a girl and make readers laugh even at somewhat dangerous moments. By doing so, the writer uses all these items to send out simple and friendly emotions to children readers.
While the past versions of this traditional story contain the meaning of devastated life of people by symbolizing a tiger which catches and eats up even young children as well as a mother, this present version written by Lee Uk Bae, focuses on emphasizing the ‘wit’ of young children who always make fun of the tiger while arguing, and also emphasizing the ‘humanity’ to make a mistake at the critical moments of life and death. The writer points out readers’ place as ‘there’ and characters’ place as ‘here’, so readers are also totally included in this storyline. Even though the writer keeps the distance between ‘there’ and ‘here’, the brother and the sister still exist as the sun and the moon in both ‘here’ and ‘there’. Moreover, the writer also secretly creates the rumor that some people have heard the crying of the tiger in order to vividly expand the world of this story and characters. The story contains only necessary sentences and these sentences get even simpler when they should emphasize rhyme and rhythms. The format of writing and illustrations are as concise and bold as possible. The publisher adopted a picture book board with longer vertical line compared to usual books, considering the actual size of the original version (65 centimeters). The publisher also decided to take pictures far beyond the original painting to make the original painting look even more natural. And the colors of dark blue and white (the margins) provides readers with fresh feelings in the entire scenes of this picture book.
