Book Information & Summary
Written by Park Ji Ri
The story of this book is about a boy, the main character, wandering outside the school for one day after the memorial ceremony, commemorating 1st anniversary for the victims sacrificed during the massive gunshot incident in high school. The boy is the only one survival from the group murder in his high school. After the incident, he is treated as ‘special’ case whether he is in school, home, or anywhere, and he happens to hate that, because he feels that his life has become ‘outsider’ in his society.
All the strangers I meet on the street recognize the school outfit I wear, and talk to me about the incidents or memorial ceremony. I am overwhelmed by their interests, or sometimes I feel collaborating with the murderer K along with the guilty feeling of my only survival.
The unstable and confused psychology of the boy who wants to live and die at the same time reminds him of the memory of gunshot incident and K under the uncertainty of the line between unconscious and conscious mind mixed with the past and the present. Through his monologue asking what the life is, we can discover the contradiction of the existence of humans. At the same time, we also feel amazed by the genius gift of the writer who makes us consider the existence of human beings in such an excellent way.
