Written and Illustrated by Kim Jung Sun
There are two girls who have the same name in a village. One girl is Soon Deuk, Park, from a brewery, and another girl is Soon Deuk, Lee, from a bicycle shop. They always used to be together, but suddenly, they became separated at the dawn of one day without knowing anything, because the war broke and people had to leave for their own safety. The writer compares their situation to a hide and seek play. The writer shows their twisted destiny according to the lyric of “Come out, come out, wherever you are” song.
Park became a tagger at their hometown and Lee left for other safe places. On her runaway journey, Lee sometimes slept outdoor under night dew, and sometimes crossed the river. She had to avoid from bombing attack no one cannot expect from where. However, she did not seem to be so depressed. The sky she saw outdoor is beautiful, and she felt even cool while crossing the river during the hot summer. The girl protected her own power of living, and passed her dangerous journey of life.
Finally, Lee hid in the shelter. Readers find Lee who hid in the shelter. They find Lee who gently shows her face out of a tent and who is waiting in line for food. And then, they say, “I found you, Lee!” Now, Lee becomes the tagger and come back to her hometown.
Through leaves turning into yellow, we can notice the change of time. When she came back home, everything changed. The bicycle shop and the brewery were all destroyed. And most of all, she cannot find her good friend, Park. Only she could find was the dog Park used to take care of. Lee cried out loud, “I give up! I can’t find you!”, and finally sat down with frustration. This picture book makes us feel how the peace is valuable in our life by showing the painful history.
