Book Information & Summary
Annyungdal, the writer who gently sends the shiny message from our small, simple, and ordinary daily life, has newly published her new picture book.
The new picture book, ‘Mary’, is the story about the dog, who has continuously been introduced in the writer’s previous works as a cheerful and joyful dog, as a main character. There are also other main characters, including three baby puppies of Mary, a seemingly indifferent but actually warm and kind grandmother, Choon-Ja grandmother who’s supposed to raise her own grand-daughter, an old man in the supermarket who is still strong enough to carry a bag of rice, grown-up kids visiting grandmother during holidays. This book presents a comforting story for all these characters. Annyungdal provides us with more detailed and abundant stories through this book.
This book boasts its writing style based on rhymes like song lyrics. The book simply presents the story of Mary becoming a family in this house, meeting with a wandering dog, having three baby puppies, saying good bye to her babies one by one, and staying alone again. And while depicting the story, the writer shows us the reality of people’s daily life in detail as well as the friendly stories of each character.
The grandfather, who suggested having a pup for the first time, looked a bit weird by saying, ‘A pup should be in red.’ In fact, this means that the grandfather has gotten dementia. However, the grandmother pretends not knowing, and turns her eyes on Mary by saying, ‘This is your home now.’ On the day when the grandfather passed away, Mary shook her tail cheerfully without knowing anything, but readers can know the time of this house just stopped for a while by watching a pile of doggy shit near a dog house.
The room of the grandmother is just like the usual room of other old ladies living in the countryside. There are some unorganized paper, hair, a red fly swatter as well as a few dead files in her room. The flies follow the doggy shit of Mary in the garden.
A neighbor grandmother who visits my grandmother never hesitates to give delicious meat to puppies while playing cards and my grandmother hands over a drink to an old man in the supermarket to express her thank for his delivering a heavy bag of rice.
Choon Ja grandmother living next door is supposed to raise a young grand-daughter because of the divorce of her son. The last puppy she keeps is always joyful and mischievous, so that it is difficult to figure out its sadness like a girl, however, readers will be able to find out this puppy also feels sad like a girl.
My grandfather passed away due to dementia, and my grandmother is left behind. At that night when Mary had to be separated with all of her three babies, she cries over the night looking at the door. The grandmother living next door feels upset about her son’s divorce, and her grand-daughter has to stay away from her parents. However, a baby puppy with a bit short front leg will protect that girl from now on.
Like other ordinary people, the characters in this picture book all have pain in their heart. However, just like cheerful ‘Mary’, who welcomes anyone and shakes her tail, they all share their pain, and accept others’ pain, too, as if those pains are not that serious. They all take good care of others not by saying, but by acting, and people simply give love, and naturally receive love from others. Therefore, readers will be able to be satisfied with warm feeling as if they got deeply comforted by these characters. The cheerfulness of Mary, who welcomes everyone by shaking her tail, is well sent to the heart of readers.
