Book Information & Summary
Illustrated by Jeon Mi Hwa
One day, the wind blows. Trees in the street are shaking, and raindrops splatter. I open the umbrella, but it gets flipped over. I tried to strongly hold the umbrella and fix the flipped umbrella, however, a car passing by makes my efforts in vain. The umbrella is broken, dark clouds are coming, and everyone begins running. So I begin running, too, but I miss my step and fall down. I turn red because of shame, but what is worse is I got water bomb from the sky. I don’t have any proper umbrella to avoid the rain. What should I do?
There are only a few text lines in this picture book. These simple lines describe one unlucky day when I get heavy rain. Big and simple illustrations are well balanced with the rhythm of writings. The form of illustrations, which is described with bold touch, full colors in huge angle without sketch, provides us with the feeling of freedom even though there isn’t any single explanation.
Plus, somewhat funny and sad situation created by sloppy ‘me’, who carries weak umbrella and thin skirt enough to be blown away by the wind even if I’m already aware of heavy rain expecting, oddly makes us feel complicated just like a mono slapstick comedy. While laughing out loud for a while, readers will be able to sympathize with the main character in this book.
