Book Information & Summary
Written and illustrated by Lee Ju Yong
Young’s family living in a small hut has a busy time in the morning on a day of spring. Dad has to take care of fields, and Young and her brother have to look after baby cows and baby goats. While their dad is working, they play with stones near the stream, and makes crown with flowers. The sunny day is so peaceful. It looks as if Young in the illustration actually picks up some flowers while humming. When she is having such a great day, there’s a baby goat around her all the time. Its name is Hweendoongi. On her way home after taking care of fields, Young ran with the worries of the mother goat hitting her with its horns. When she ran, the goat also ran following her, and Young finally cried when she got back home. However, there’s always Hweendoongi following her, when all these events happened.
One day, her dad and uncle tied up the mother goat to go to the market. Young feels so sorry for Hweendoongi, because it’s about to get separated with its mother. Young also had an experience to get asleep tired of crying while waiting for her mom, and staying alone last winter. When this thought pops up in her mind, she decided that she cannot just let the mother goat be sold to the market. She followed them and barely caught her dad and uncle. She begged not to sell the mother goat. In the end, her dad accepted her wish and gave up selling the mother goat. Young let her dad know that the magpie gave birth to baby magpies after he got back home from the market. Yes, their family house embraces the living creatures, not just their family but magpies, cows, chickens, goats, and so on. The family waiting for their dinner looks so happy.
