Book Information & Summary
Written by Ryu Ho-sun / illustrated by Kim Hyo-jin
Lee-tae, who is more mature than his friends, has to take care of his baby-like mother, and help his mother and grandmother make up with each other after argument all the time. Joo-hyun, who is ischievous, always makes fun of his friends with an absurd story that people have to pay fines whenever breathing in the elevator. Lee-tae and Joo-hyun are best friends. This book gives us smile and impression through usual events that happen in Lee-tae and Joo-hyun’s daily life.
For Lee-tae, the second most important person after his mother is his grandmother. The grandmother is dissatisfied with Lee-tae’s mother getting married abroad without permission, but she always thinks of her grand-son as the first priority, and shows deep affection enough to move to places near Lee-tae’s home. The grandfather, who came to Korea from the US, made Joo-hyun realize how having grandparents feels like. Joo-hyun’s grandfather does not smile, and not say many words. Joo hyun felt depressed at first because he had to think of his grandfather as a king, but Joo hyun finally befriended with his grandfather after going through several events together. His grandfather eventually became a real ‘grandpa’, not just who is sending him presents on Christmas Day like Santa Clause, but also who listens to Joo-hyun as a friend and shares good memories.
The best thing of this book is that the main characters keep the perspective as children. The author, who claims his tone is like the tone of children’s diary, has learned the style and tone of children by reviewing the diaries of his students for several years. Therefore, the tone of Lee-tae and Joo-hyun is innocent and child-like. The book is fun to read with this unique tone of innocence and childishness.
