Written by Kim Mi-hye / illustrated by Choi Mi-ran
Thump!
The story begins with the villainous tiger from The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon falling to his death in a millet field. Taken by the messenger of death to be judged by the lords of the Underworld, the tiger is sentenced to severe punishment, based on the mirror and scale of judgment. The tiger has to trek through all kinds of hell, from the infernal boiling cauldron hell, the teeth-chattering ice hell, the hell where oxen plowed on his tongue, the hell crammed with sharp knife blades, to finally the serpent hell teeming with vipers. Thus, the tiger repents for his sins and is reborn as a tiger once again.
This time, he returns to the world as “the tiger respected as an elder by woodcutters,”and leads a simple-hearted and dutiful life. The lords of the Underworld reward the virtuous tiger with the privilege of being reincarnated as a person. What kind of a person would the tiger become?
