Book Information & Summary
Written by Han, Chang-Hoon / Illustrated by Han, Joo-Yeon
The black island is located in the middle of ocean, far away from the land.
You see nothing but ocean in the black island.
A mysterious landscape in this lonely island and the people who live in it...
Well, let me tell you a story about what happened in the black island long time ago.
This story consists of seven legends of the black island, modeled after the island that the writer once lived in. Although the story is based on the legends, it gives us a feeling of the real one. Moreover, it easily attracts kids with its sweet narration.
The first story is about a 'white island' made up of several small islands. The son of the heaven and the daughter of the sea fell in love, which was what they were never supposed to do, and all the people in the heaven and the sea were changed into rocks. In the second story, the gods who went to mountains in the west of the black island could not comfortably hang out due to a huge shouting of a man named Poong-Gae. Poong-Gae cried out for money because he could not get money to take care of his sick mother. Finally, the gods decided to help Poong-Gae, leading him to a cave where there are lots of fish. The cave still exists below the 'Gods' Rock' in Korea.
This story centers not only on the island's landscape but on the importance of determination. The writer sends a message of what you always have to keep in mind in your life through other short stories: 'A good boy, Yoon-Ha' and 'An old cremator'. Yoon-Ha who never forgets to thank other people even after getting what he desired for makes us think about being grateful.
