Book Information & Summary
Written by Chang, Soo-Kyung / Illustrated by Shim, Eun-Sook
Hae-Ryong became so famous at school after getting harsh punishment from one teacher. A few days later, he won the first prize to the amazement of everybody.
But, he was not happy at all; everything began to irritate him every single day.
Why did he have to suffer even after winning the prize?
Hae-Ryong, a fourth-grade-student, is a mischievous boy, who always makes troubles on purpose to win the bet, which is that he will never cry even after being harshly punished ?y one very strict teacher with his stick. He is also a cheerful boy so that, by his wits, he sometimes succeeds in avoiding punishment, even after breaking windows in classroom. Meanwhile, Young-Hoon, class monitor, is a model student, getting good grades and willingly making sacrifices for other people. Young-Hoon has an 'ambition' to win the first prize in the first semester and be elected the school president in the second semester. Both Hae-Ryong and Young-Hoon are rivals who want to win the favor of Ji-Min, who is a very pretty girl.
The issue gets worse as Hae-Ryong gets the first prize that was arguably supposed to go to Young-Hoon. The only reason Hae-Ryong won the prize was that his angry mother harshly complained to the school of his physical punishment. Parent Council calls for the principal to officially apologize for the awarding and to make the nominating process transparent, but the principal confronts the Council saying it is his own right to give awards to the students who he thinks appropriate. The school is transformed into a battle ground, where the game is played by teachers whose only goal is to get promotion or to get retired without any errors and the mothers who are so eager to make their children accomplish what they could not get as students years ago. Children become separated by several groups, influenced by their mothers. When the teacher, who is mainly responsible for this event, almost got fired from the school, children became more confused, divided by two groups, pros and cons. But the one who suffered the most was Hae-Ryong. After having qualms of conscience about getting the prize, he began to hate the prize and everyone including teachers.
