Book Information & Summary
Written and Illustrated by Kim Sung Ra
Tangerine People who grow, harvest, and eat the first tangerines of December
In general, freelancers sometimes have or don’t have jobs, but especially, the season of winter is more difficult time to freelancers. When all the jobs frequently requested disappear and when it feels like the time has stopped, the tangerine harvest of December suddenly calls on me. I have to get up early in the morning, at least at 5 am, to get out of the bed and join the group harvesting tangerines of the year. Therefore, I get out of my warm room even if I cannot properly control my body due to severe cold. When all the family members, including mom, nephew and niece, uncle, and aunt, etc. gather together and finish their own bowl of hot noodle, we all get to meet a wide field filled with yellow and fresh tangerines.
Without knowing, readers can feel so many noises of picking up tangerines, and kind local dialects of Jeju Island everywhere. All sizes of big, medium, and small tangerines which grew up thanks to the sun, rain, and the wind begin to be piled up and only green leaves have been left in the field. Finally, the whole process of farming tangerines of this winter is over. In Jeju Island around this time of the year, there are so many baskets of tangerines left in restaurants, cafes, bookstores, and everywhere. People send out messages saying, “Help yourself.”, and share their sweet and sour tangerines so kindly. All over the places in Jeju Island, even defective tangerines or tiny ones taste so good, so they all spread the fragrance of yellow tangerines. The writer has selected his own experience of tangerine harvest, which he has never missed even once during the winter, as the base of the story. The writer includes the vivid scene of tangerine harvest with the background of his aunt’s tangerine field. All the concerns and experiences to grow a tangerine, such as gathering rapeseed oil and traditional medicine material to make fertilizers, growing geese to get rid of snails, and worrying about the huge typhoon and heatwaves during the summer, etc., turn into the words of saying from harvesting people while picking up tangerines.
