Book Information & Summary
Illustrated and Written by Choi Kyung Sik
Cool and blue imagination raised up from an old fountain
There is a dried-up fountain in the middle of apartment complex. Some people say it smells like the ocean on rainy days, however, no one pays attention to that fountain but only one boy is interested in that fountain. Nobody knows why, but he always stays next to the fountain all day long. Is it because he feels somewhat strange sign that other people just pass by? Or the boy may enjoy his endless imagination while looking at the fountain. Since it cannot be explained by writing, we can even more broadly interpret why. Depending on who reads this book, he or she would understand the story based on his or her own thinking. The day is getting dark, but suddenly, the ground begins shaking, and there is something coming up from the ground - which is a whale.
The whale carries the boy, and begins flying in the dark sky. The sky with the moon makes us feel mysterious. Where does this whale go while flying away in the dark sky across the city? The whale dives into the blue ocean with splash sound. The boy follows the whale into a deep, deep ocean, and begins swimming freely. It is a deep and blue ocean that he cannot meet in the city. When we look inside further, the whale always looks at the boy. The giant whale approaches him in a friendly way.
When the boy comes up to the surface of the water, more whales are coming toward the boy from somewhere. Each whale is carrying its own fountain in his back. Those fountains turn into the breathing holes of the whales, and the water is raised up from those fountains. It looks like those dried-up fountains resolving their old thirst, as if they have never blown out the water before. The boy flies away on water jet. The boy takes the whale fountain and feels so excited while playing. Splattered water drops shine in different colors, and the joy is reaching its peak. At that moment, the rain is dropping down, and the boy comes back to the reality.
The boy comes home wet. However, if a reader has a bright eye, he might find a starfish in the boy’s clothes. The imagination and the reality are all tangled up with each other just like Mobius strip. It feels like the salty ocean stays right in front of our noses.
